The morphology of two species of Skeletonema Greville from Paris Bay (Russkiy Island, the Sea of Japan) was studied by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The examined species were identified as S. grethae and S. japonicum; their occurrence in the seas of Russia was recorded for the first time. Detailed morphological descriptions are given for each species. The study of the development of S. grethae and S. japonicum in laboratory culture revealed the differences in their life cycles.

Key words: planktonic diatoms, morphology, laboratory culture, Skeletonema grethae, S. japonicum.
